‘I don’t care if you’re a foreigner’ – Ronaldo
1 / 13 Partisans of the “European dream” will have their say in Sunday’s first of four Champions League semi-finals, with the reigning European champions set to host Real Madrid in the semi-final.
With the draw for the third round being completed on Monday, a decision is expected on Wednesday, and on Saturday night will be the final time for the Portuguese superstar to play in the final.
As for Ronaldo, he has already said his heart is set on the final at Stadio Olimpico in Madrid.
He wants to play a key role, he said, to make his mark on history.
“It’s very important for me that the game of football is a European game, and that it’s played in Spain, in the capital of the country where we live,” he said.
“To me, it’s not a matter of if I’ll play, it’ll be the result.”
I’ve had so many offers to play here.
If it’s Madrid, then it’s Real Madrid.
If Barcelona is the team, then I’ll be playing.
“But for me, I don’t really care what anyone thinks.”
The Portuguese’s compatriot, Lionel Messi, has already been linked with the clash, while Real Madrid and Barcelona are also rumoured to be interested.
The two clubs will be hoping to land Ronaldo, who will have a chance to put a damper on Real Madrid’s hopes of retaining their title, as well as their hopes of keeping up with Barcelona, who are also in the hunt.
With Ronaldo playing in the Champions League, the final in Madrid would be the most prestigious of his career.
And in a country where the team that finishes second in the league wins the league, he will hope to do so with his name on the line.
“This is the biggest competition in the world,” Ronaldo said.
“It’s a great honour to represent my country.”
If it’s a tie, it means everything to me.
But if we play, then we’re the Champions.
I’m really looking forward to it.
“There’s a lot of things to be worked on in the game, but it’s also a big step for my career.
It’s a big honour for me to represent Portugal, and to be the player of the year in the first place.”
The second leg will take place on Saturday, December 14, with Real Madrid being led by Ronaldo, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
